Oakwood Village

Oakwood Village is primarily a residential neighborhood, characterized by commercial strips along its main roads. It boasts numerous schools and parks, providing ample recreational and educational opportunities for families. Historically an Italian and Portuguese enclave, the area's cultural legacy endures through its bakeries, restaurants, and sports bars. The vibrant local arts scene is highlighted by the annual Oakwood Village Arts Festival and the Oakwood Village Library and Arts Centre, fostering a growing community of artists.

History

Oakwood developed as a streetcar suburb, heavily influenced by the presence of streetcar lines. As the area expanded and businesses began to flourish on Eglinton Avenue, the Township of York partnered with the TTC in 1924 to establish the Oakwood and Rogers Road Streetcars to accommodate the growing ridership. An extra fare was charged by the TTC when the streetcar crossed the city limits. Although these streetcar lines are no longer in operation, the loop remains and is now used by the St. Clair streetcar.
